ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • With a winter storm warning in effect, drivers in Dover are advised to move vehicles to safe areas and check on each other's well-being if a car accident occurs; experts recommend gathering information and calling 911 & police promptly.  Delaware Online

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that regular gas in the Central Atlantic was priced at about $2.90 per gallon last week+ there was little change from the previous week, with prices remaining roughly 3.5% above the national average.  Delaware Online
  • Delmarva Power said its high energy costs are driven by rising supply prices and clarified Gov. Meyer’s remarks by noting its investments are prudent and carefully reviewed by the PSC (including a $6.5-million Customer Relief Fund to aid low- and moderate-income customers).  WDEL
  • The Department of Energy recommends setting thermostats between 68 & 70°F while awake and lowering them when asleep or away to save up to 10% on heating costs in Dover. Homeowners can also use space heaters safely to warm single rooms.  Delaware Online
  • The U.S. Department of Labor said that Delaware’s initial unemployment benefit claims dropped from 553 to 374 last week for the week ending Jan. 17. Nationwide, new claims rose by 1,000, reaching 200,000.  Delaware Online

  • The DSU Department of Marketing and Communications launched In the Spotlight (a series highlighting faculty and staff achievements) to share successes in research, innovation, and community health. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DNREC (the state environmental agency) warns residents not to sled or snowboard on snow-covered dunes to protect fragile wildlife habitat and local beaches; only marked crossings are allowed in Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore state parks.  WBOC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials warn that drivers may face travel restrictions as a winter storm approaches. The three-level system (warning, restriction, driving ban) is designed to keep roads clear for emergency and essential workers.  Coast TV
  • DelDOT is preparing for an approaching snowstorm by pre-treating key roads with brine and deploying snowplows based on traffic volume and weather forecasts. Residents in privately maintained subdivisions should note that only state-managed roads are scheduled to be plowed.  Delaware Online

HEALTH NEWS

  • With Winter Storm Fern approaching, pet owners in Delaware are urged to keep dogs safe in the cold by using warm gear for thin-coated breeds. Dogs must not be left outdoors longer than 15 minutes (per state rules).  Delaware Online
