ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Delaware faces a major winter storm today with snow, sleet & ice causing hazardous travel conditions as state agencies and universities close. Roads remain snow covered while plows work under a state of emergency.  Delaware Public Media
  • After several days of forecasts, snow fell across Delaware overnight with measurements ranging from 1.1 inches to 4 inches, including 3 inches in Dover at 7:30 a.m. A municipal truck plowed snow in Middletown to clear streets.  Bay to Bay News
  • On Jan. 25, a heavy snowfall blanketed Delaware streets, with Woodside receiving up to 4 inches and Wilmington Airport and Newark at 2.9 inches while officials declared a state of emergency. Forecasts predicted additional ice and sleet later today — urging drivers to avoid non-essential travel.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In Dover, residents must clear public sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall ending as law requires; driveways generally are exempt unless they border a public space (the previous 12-hour rule changed last year). Throwing snow onto gutters is prohibited.  Delaware Online
  • Residents losing power after recent snow and ice can quickly report outages to Delmarva Power (via online, phone, or text) or Delaware Electric Cooperative by calling the provided numbers; reports should be made as soon as power is lost to help restore service promptly.  Delaware Online

HEALTH NEWS

  • Healthcare experts warn that shoveling heavy snow left by Storm Fern can trigger injuries and heart issues; Dr. Marisa Conti of Beebe Healthcare advises residents to wear non-slip shoes and push the snow rather than lift it to avoid trips to the emergency room.  WDEL
