ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Delaware State troopers and Newark Police responded Thursday morning—around 7 a.m.—to an accidental shooting at Las Américas ASPIRA Charter High School on Otts Chapel Road when a staff member accidentally discharged a firearm; the injured person was treated by New Castle County paramedics and flown to Christiana Hospital.  WDEL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Odyssey Charter School opened its six-sport mega-plex on Wednesday for teams, student-athletes and the community. The complex covers four city blocks with advanced LED lighting and a press box—features that allow for multiple events such as sports contests, club matches and graduations.  WDEL
  • Delaware lawmakers introduced Senate Bill 106 on Tuesday to require all public and charter schools to adopt written cell phone policies by August 1—this action addresses rising concerns over classroom distractions and student mental health. The measure will be reviewed by the Senate Education Committee in the coming weeks.  Delaware LIVE

  • Senate Bill 49 — sponsored by Sen. Brian Pettyjohn and Rep. Valerie Jones Giltner — aims to designate emergency communicators as first informers and reorganize emergency management statutes for better clarity and usability. The bill cleared committee review on March 26 and now is on the Senate Ready List for a floor debate.  Coast TV
  • Governor Matt Meyer delivered his first State of the State address on Thursday where he outlined plans for education, healthcare, housing, workforce development and government efficiency. He proposed lowering income taxes for most Delawareans while raising rates for top earners, investing $6 million in classrooms, planning a new medical school, signing an order to reestablish the Council on Homelessness and launching a recreational marijuana market.  Coast TV
  • A state task force in Dover said that boosting Delaware’s affordable housing would require regulatory streamlining, workforce improvements, updated building standards, and financial incentives—steps aimed at increasing the supply of low-cost homes.  Bay to Bay News
