EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Delaware State University honored its military-affiliated graduating students on April 28 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center where Master Sergeant Varlensia T. Relaford led the Pass and Review ceremony and presented Military Graduation Cords for balancing academic work with military service. Officials including President Tony Allen and former DSU President Wilma Mishoe spoke to support the students as the event marked the start of National Military Appreciation Month. - ➤ State and local leaders with officials from DelTech cut the ribbon on April 30 at the renovated Terry Building—located at the Charles L. Terry, Jr. Campus in Dover. The building now has upgraded features and a new Student Success Center—so students can get all their services in one spot. WDEL
- ➤ Governor Matt Meyer signed Executive Order #9 to create the Office of Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety; the new office, housed in the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, will coordinate programs and work with community groups to review current efforts and plan future actions—this measure comes as Delaware faces rising gun violence concerns. The office will focus on identifying service gaps and developing a strategic roadmap to improve community safety. Coast TV
- ➤ At Monday’s meeting, Dover City Council reviewed two versions of a proposed ordinance that extends the time for removing snow from sidewalks from 12 to 24 hours after falloffs—one version includes a paper notice before issuing a fine and the other omits the warning to reduce risks to staff. The Council will make a final decision on the ordinance at its May 12 meeting. Delaware Public Media
- ➤ Governor Matt Meyer signed an executive order establishing an Office of Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety under the Department of Safety and Homeland Security—this office will coordinate state and local programs, promote data sharing, and work with lawmakers and community groups to reduce gun violence.
