COMMUNITY NEWS

  • GoFundMe data shows Delawareans made over 655,000 donations totaling $1.4 million by supporting campaigns for medical, memorial, and emergency causes — a sign of ongoing local generosity. The platform also named a donor who contributed over 300 times to help neighbors.  Delaware Online

CRIME NEWS

  • A police chase began near Camden at a Walmart at 9 p.m. on Friday and ended in New Castle County when a trooper fired at a driver seen with a gun, critically injuring a 25-year-old Dover man — three passengers were arrested while the trooper was placed on administrative leave pending a use-of-force investigation.  WBOC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Thousands of orphaned birds from a misdirected USPS shipment have been rehabilitated at First State Animal Center in Camden and will soon be available for adoption. The Delaware Department of Agriculture received a call on May 2nd about roughly 10,000 birds shipped from a Pennsylvania hatchery—about 4,000 of which were deceased—and the hatchery is investigating the error.  WGMD
  • The Delaware Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty will hold a press conference (11:45 a.m.), rally, and lobby day on Tuesday, May 13th on the east steps of Legislative Hall in Dover to support House Bill 35. Supporters urge lawmakers to give the two-thirds vote for HB 35 (a measure to add a permanent ban on the death penalty to the state constitution) following the penalty repeal in 2024 and recent federal actions.  WGMD

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dover Motor Speedway was voted one of the top 10 NASCAR tracks by USA TODAY voters and ranked seventh, and its fast speeds and high banks have long excited fans. The track will host NASCAR weekend from July 18-20 with new attractions such as Miles Beach — a boardwalk with a giant rubber duck — and free shuttle buses to Rehoboth Beach.  Delaware Online
  • Cape Henlopen High swept both the boys’ and girls’ team titles at the Henlopen Conference track & field championships that ended on Friday evening in Felton — a strong finish in the two-day meet.  Bay to Bay News
