COMMUNITY NEWS

  • MISSION BBQ is offering free sandwiches to active duty and veterans all week, with Marine Corps receiving the free meal today and other branches on scheduled days. It will host Lunch with the Heroes on Saturday, May 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Dover location.  Delaware Online
  • Anglers can fish, crab and clam without a license on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7 in Delaware waters as part of National Fishing and Boating Week. Anglers 16 and older must get a free FIN number and follow state rules (per DNREC).  Delaware LIVE
  • Grass Roots Rescue is seeking foster homes as it will receive 33 dogs rescued from a West Virginia hoarding case tomorrow evening; the nonprofit said many animals still lack placements and will receive full support with veterinary care & supplies.  Coast TV

  • Tesla is recalling over 218,000 vehicles for rearview camera delays; Mercedes-Benz is recalling 144,000 vehicles for infotainment resets, and Chrysler is recalling 12,000 Ram trucks for powertrain control issues. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fourteen MOT students at Delaware State University celebrated their pinning ceremony and will begin a six-month clinical fieldwork as they transition from classroom to licensed occupational therapy practice; academic leaders (Dr. Scott-Jones, Dr. Brittney Pride, Dr. Margaret Gulledge, and Dr. Megan Barton) highlighted student research and community support.  Delaware State University
  • Delaware State University honored its military-affiliated graduates on May 1 during the Pass and Review Ceremony at the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center, where university officials and Dover AFB representatives recognized their service and academic achievement + celebrated the granting of military graduation cords.  Delaware State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On May 10, the International WeLoveU Foundation, State Representative Sophie Phillips, and Delaware State Parks hosted a Mother's Day tree planting at Bellevue State Park — part of the Mom’s Garden Project marking the 75th anniversary of Delaware State Parks — that gathered volunteers including Miss Delaware.  WDEL
  • Local bird expert Erika Zambello advises Dover residents to plant native flowers, fill feeders with a sugar water mixture, mark windows (to prevent collisions), and add birdbaths to attract hummingbirds to their yards as warm weather continues.   • Delaware lawmakers consider House Bill 332 that would limit 7-OH levels in kratom products to 2% — a move that could restrict relief for chronic pain patients who depend on these alternatives, raising concerns in our community.  Bay to Bay News

  • Delaware’s Health and Social Services report showed that healthcare spending hit $11.6 billion in 2024, far above the 3% target and rising for the fifth year. Lawmakers plan to raise the benchmark and cap hospital pricing (via a global budgeting model) to help control costs.  Delaware Public Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dover Motor Speedway will host the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star race on May 17 with a new three-part format over 350 laps. The final 200 laps will feature 26 drivers competing for a $1 million prize while officials remain optimistic about returning to a traditional points race in the future.  Delaware Online
