CRIME NEWS

  • The Department of Justice shut down a property near Hartly known as The Animal House after an investigation generated 160 complaints over eight years about illegal bonfires, toxic fumes, harboring fugitives, drive-by shootings and drug sales; owner Shawn Haley and tenants had to vacate by May 12 while the property remains closed awaiting a permanent abatement hearing.  WGMD

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Delaware Council on Banking has opened applications for the new Delaware Community Investment Venture Fund which will help banks, credit unions, and CDFIs offer innovative financial products to underserved communities. Eligible institutions must submit their applications by 5 p.m. on June 16 (the first window opened May 15 and an optional info session is set for May 22 at 3 p.m.).  Delaware LIVE

  • According to the Delaware Climate Office, despite recent rains Delaware remained 1—3 inches below normal rainfall levels, with Kent County experiencing the worst drought conditions.  Bay to Bay News

  • After battling uterine cancer, Nicole Pickles now leads the Cancer Support Community Delaware which offers free emotional support, healthy lifestyle classes, and vital resources to cancer patients and caregivers. The nonprofit will mark its 15th annual Wings of Hope event on June 21 at Milton Memorial Park from 9 a.m. to noon — hundreds will release Painted Lady butterflies to honor those touched by cancer.  Delaware Online
