EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delaware lawmakers introduced House Bill 203 that would require every high school to offer a half-credit financial literacy course starting with 9th graders in the 2026–27 school year—students must complete the course to graduate. Bill sponsors say the change is needed because many households struggle with money.  Coast TV

  • Red Knot Fest will be held on May 31 from noon to 4 p.m. at Slaughter Beach Pavilion, 356 Bay Ave — the annual event will feature horseshoe crabs and migratory shorebirds — offering locals a chance to explore nature up close.  Bay to Bay News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Matt Meyer signed House Bill 140 on Tuesday, creating the Ron Silverio/Heather Block End-of-Life Options Act that lets terminally ill adults with six months or less to live choose to end their lives with safeguards in place. The law will take effect on January 1 and may begin sooner if the rules are finalized—patients must have two doctors confirm their choice before receiving the medicine.  Delaware LIVE
  • Delaware non-profits held a rally on the steps of Legislative Hall in Dover Tuesday to urge state support amid rising service needs and federal funding cuts—leaders warned that without steady grants some organizations risk closing vital programs.  WDEL
  • Sussex County officials introduced a proposed $285.1M budget for FY26 that boosts spending by 7.3% and lowers the property tax rate from 44.5 cents to 2.14 cents per $100 assessed value — the plan funds wastewater upgrades, public safety, and community projects. A public hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. on June 17 at the County Administrative Offices in Georgetown and the budget must be adopted by June 30.  Delaware LIVE
  • On May 20, Delaware lawmakers unanimously passed a bill to create a new cabinet-level Department of Veterans Affairs — many veterans attended the session to support the change.  Bay to Bay News
