Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 6th of June.
Good morning, Dover.
On May 31, Dover Police responded to a bus stop robbery on White Oak Road when a 53-year-old victim was pepper-sprayed and had her purse stolen before being taken to Bayhealth Kent Campus, and on June 1 the department arrested 45-year-old Christy Guzman, who is held on $15,000 bail (charged with Robbery First Degree and Assault Second Degree).
Delaware will host 19 concerts this June at venues across Dewey Beach, Wilmington, Lewes and Dover—music fans can enjoy a range of shows from tribute bands to blues, country and pop-punk.
Ticket prices and times vary and events will be held at local spots like Freeman Arts Pavilion and Bally's Dover Casino Resort.
The Joint Finance Committee sent a $6.58 billion state operating budget to the General Assembly that raises funding by 7.36% over this year while protecting Delaware's reserve funds—this bill includes a 2% raise for education and state merit employees, increased funding for public schools and healthcare, and support for literacy, victim services, and rental assistance. Lawmakers must pass the bill before session ends on June 30 and will consider further changes amid federal funding uncertainty.
Delaware lawmakers introduced HB 210, the Pollution Accountability Act, to increase penalties for commercial polluters and require that 40% of fines be reinvested in communities near violations — a measure that targets issues like air pollution, nutrient runoff and hazardous waste. Sponsored by Rep. Larry Lambert, House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown and Sen. Nicole Poore, the bill now sits on the House Natural Resources Committee — where officials will review the proposal.
Delaware legislators introduced House Bill 174, known as the Elizabeth Barnes Act, to offer financial and supportive services for families after a suicide loss by adding a fee to residential, wireless, business and prepaid services.
If passed, the law will use collected funds—up to a cap that returns excess revenue to the general fund—to help cover funeral expenses, mental health counseling, temporary housing and lost wages starting January 1.
The Delaware Farm Bureau and Department of Agriculture have launched a mental health campaign that offers free stickers with the 988 hotline for tractor cabs and farm offices to help farmers facing market changes and bad weather.
Organizers say the campaign—part of a national effort—will lead to more outreach to support rural workers needing help.
