CRIME NEWS

  • Dover Police arrested 20-year-old Makhai Miller on July 2 for his alleged role in a shootout on Barrister Place that led to the fatal shooting of Daniel Guzman Jr. on June 14—detectives are still gathering evidence to find the person fully responsible while Miller faces charges with a $66,000 bail.  First State Update

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A state audit report released on July 3 found that 62 special education teachers in 14 public school districts worked with expired or invalid licenses, totaling 26,289 days without proper credentials. The Department of Education will ramp up license renewal alerts and pursue changes under House Bill 97 to close the licensing gaps.  WBOC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Matt Meyer on Tuesday reflected on his first six months in office as he signed Delaware’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget—making historic investments in public education and other key programs. He noted that despite partisan challenges and upcoming federal bill cuts, Delaware leads in its tax contribution and will continue to work on reforms to support housing, healthcare and more.  WDEL
  • The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced that starting Saturday, July 12, anglers will not need reservations to surf fish at seven drive-on beaches, including Key Box, Conquest, Faithful Steward at Delaware Seashore State Park, three designated beaches at Fenwick Island State Park, and Beach Plum Island—covering nearly 64% of available sites. Reservations will still be required on summer weekends and holidays at five high-demand locations such as Gordons Pond and Herring Point—officials will monitor usage and may reinstate requirements during busy periods.  Delaware LIVE
  • Gov. Matt Meyer held his first monthly press conference to say that the new One Big Beautiful Bill will make tax cuts and cutbacks to Medicaid and SNAP while he works with lawmakers on income tax changes and protecting local control over energy projects. He also discussed delays with an offshore wind project and disputed rejected DSPC Board nominations that affect the Port of Wilmington (official decisions are still pending).  Delaware Public Media
  • DNREC announced changes to the surf fishing reservation system for most drive-on beaches—eliminating the need for reservations—and said the new rules will take effect soon.  Bay to Bay News

  • Beebe Healthcare announced it earned an A rating for social responsibility from The Lown Institute (an independent healthcare thinktank) as part of its care commitments.  Bay to Bay News
  • ChristianaCare and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia announced on July 8 a strategic affiliation to expand pediatric care in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The partnership will begin next spring—integrating CHOP’s expertise with ChristianaCare’s network to improve access to neonatal and pediatric services for local families.  Delaware Online
