EDUCATION NEWS

  • Warren Rosenfeld — a local Jewish delicatessen owner — is asking for donations to expand his project funding free field trips for eighth graders to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. He has raised funds through personal contributions, Facebook donations, and support from the Jewish Federation of Delaware but needs another $125,000 to include more Delaware schools.  Bay to Bay News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DelDOT is designing a median barrier along Route 1—extending from Route 30 near Argo’s Corner to Route 16—after a series of serious accidents raised safety concerns. The design is expected to be completed this fiscal year as local residents push for safer roadways.  Coast TV
  • Dover Police Chief Thomas Johnson introduced a half-a-million-dollar augmented reality simulation training device Tuesday at the department headquarters that features a 300 degree semi-circle of five screens and a new HVAC system funded by state grants — making the tool available to all Delaware law enforcement agencies.  Delaware Public Media
  • The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal warned citizens that Class 'L' fire extinguishers—which are marketed for lithium battery fires but are not approved by independent labs—do not meet the current state fire code. Officials said only tested Class A, B, C, D and K extinguishers can be used to fight fires.  WGMD

  • Cape Henlopen baseball catcher Jase Mitchell was drafted by the Houston Astros in the seventh round with the 216th pick on July 14 while he had planned to play for the University of Kentucky. He hit .509 with 5 home runs and 28 RBI during his standout senior season and helped the Vikings win the state championship—adding his selection to a proud local tradition.  Coast TV
  • At Dover Motor Speedway, fans will see ARCA, Xfinity and NASCAR Cup races during a busy race weekend from July 18 to July 20 featuring the debut of Miles Beach with sand, a tiki hut and a giant rubber duck. ESPN SportsCenter will broadcast from the track at 10 a.m.—highlighting the event as drivers like Shane van Gisbergen face key challenges in the In-Season Tournament while Katherine Legge will not race at Dover.  Delaware Online
