ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Logan Smith of Dover set a new record for Golden Tilefish by catching a 56-pound, 3.2 ounce fish near Indian River Inlet aboard the Blue Betty II, officials with DNREC said. The fish surpassed the previous record from 2020 by three and a half pounds — establishing a new gold standard for the prized catch.  WDEL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware drivers must renew their licenses every eight years and may do so in person, online, or at kiosks during the six-month period before the renewal date on their birthday. The DMV announced new fee hikes—increasing the license fee from $40 to $50 and raising other charges—that will take effect on Oct. 1 while toll increases start on Aug. 15.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware’s Department of Justice is partnering with End Community Violence Now and Leaders in Transition to host a public safety town hall on July 21 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Sankofa Cultural Arts Center in Dover. The event will focus on crime prevention, education, economic development, and quality of life improvements following community concerns raised at a Dover City Council meeting on July 14 — Ronald Handy will serve as a special guest.  WBOC
  • Delaware’s House Bill 187 passed the House on June 30 and Senate on July 1—now awaiting Gov. Matt Meyer’s signature—and would legalize direct-to-consumer wine shipments with limits on case quantities and a required impact study. Wine group Free the Grapes! said the bill restricts consumer choice by favoring distributors.  Delaware Online
  • Gov. Matt Meyer signed the new Pollution Accountability Act that increased penalties for commercial polluters by raising fines from $5,000 to $15,000 for stream pollution + directing 40% of collected fines to community environmental projects. The law took effect on July 16.  Coast TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • DNREC reports that tick bites in Delaware have been linked to a rise in alpha-gal syndrome—a red meat allergy first noted in 2009 that can cause severe reactions. The Lone Star tick, black-legged tick and American dog tick have been biting more residents, and experts urge using repellents and proper tick removal to help protect health.  Delaware Online
