CRIME NEWS

  • Dover police arrested Antonio Powell, a 36-year-old man, on Tuesday after he allegedly raped and strangled a 72-year-old woman at her home and took him to Sussex Correctional Institution on $110,000 bail while he faces charges of first degree rape and strangulation.  WBOC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware hired two top law firms—Wachtell Lipton Rosen and Katz and Potter Anderson and Corroon LLP—to defend SB 21, a law that limits shareholder lawsuits to help keep big companies registered in the state. The firms have been contracted at low rates, with Wachtell charging a flat fee of $100,000 and Potter Anderson offering a courtesy discount as the law faces a challenge in the Delaware Supreme Court.  Delaware Online
  • Governor Matt Meyer and Agriculture Secretary Don Clifton announced on July 24 that four new members and two reappointed members will serve on the Governor’s Council on Agriculture, which advises on state farm and food policies. New appointees include Gwynn Pierce, the first African American member on the council, and Jackie King who represents ag professionals.  Delaware Public Media
  • Rick Geisenberger resigned as chair of the hospital cost review board last month after Gov. Matt Meyer asked to cancel meetings during a lawsuit by ChristianaCare — a move Geisenberger said compromised the board’s impartiality. David Singleton has been named to fill the seat while Geisenberger remains a board member — ensuring continued oversight of hospital cost practices.  Delaware Online
  • Governor Matt Meyer announced a leadership change in his Administration today as Vanessa Phillips became Senior Advisor and Misty Seemans became Chief of Staff. Governor Meyer praised Phillips for her role in major initiatives (including education investments and public safety reforms) and commended Seemans for her legal expertise.  WGMD

  • Tommy Janton will swim in the men's 100-meter backstroke at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore—preliminary heats will start at 10 p.m. EST on July 27.
