EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Delaware State University spokesperson acknowledged reports from August 15 of President Tony Allen's alleged DUI arrest—no further details were provided.  Bay to Bay News
  • The Delaware Department of Education said the latest assessment results show small gains in reading and math, but a literacy emergency still remains. Governor Meyer and education officials said targeted investments and new literacy supports will be used this school year—especially in progress-making districts—to help every student reach grade level.  WGMD

FINANCE NEWS

  • Customers in Delaware may file claims for an AT&T data breach settlement following breaches in March and July 2024—eligible individuals who can prove documented losses might receive up to $7,500 with claims due by Nov. 18; those wishing to opt out and keep their right to sue must submit a written request by Oct. 17.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware DOT raised toll prices on highways effective Aug. 15, affecting travelers and beachgoers in Newark and Middletown—cash or E-Z Pass users now face higher fees on I-95, Route 301 and Route 1—and free transponders are available through Aug. 31.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware State University mourns the death of former Governor Michael Castle—a longtime public servant who served on the DSU Board and in many government roles. DSU offers condolences to his family and honors his lasting legacy in public service.  Delaware State University
  • City officials walked Barrister Place on Friday to review safety upgrades after neighbors voiced concerns over crime following the June shooting of Daniel Guzman. Officials will consider free Ring cameras—an alternative to a costly fence survey—and additional lighting while planning a community meeting in early September to decide further steps.  WBOC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Thursday saw sunny weather with many boats fishing Delmarva waters as the Grizzly caught an 8.13 lb flounder and Captain Bones recorded two Delaware Citation Snakeheads (4.74 lb and 6.37 lb) from Dragon Run while Captain Aaron Herd’s charter caught an 8 lb flounder. Old Inlet Bait and Tackle said the surf is producing spot, croaker, kings and pompano.  WGMD
