EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Elks National Foundation has launched the 2025-26 Elks Most Valuable Student scholarship contest that awards students based on academics — leadership, service, and financial need. Students in Dover who meet the criteria can apply for scholarship funding.  Bay to Bay News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware Office of Highway Safety and local police have launched the annual 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign, which runs through September 5th to improve safety for Labor Day weekend—when impaired driving is most dangerous. Officers will use high-visibility DUI patrols and public education, and the OHS urges drivers to plan ahead with a designated driver or rideshare.  WGMD
  • Gov. Matt Meyer signed Senate Bill 52 to update pension rules and ease staffing shortages in schools and state agencies. The law removes the $50,000 earnings cap, lowers the age threshold, and shortens the separation period from six to three months—now including charter school substitute teachers—to help meet staffing needs before the new school year.  Coast TV
  • On Tuesday, a US Coast Guard team led by Sector Delaware Bay and nine other agencies inspected 78 shipping containers, 53 commercial vehicles, 98 personally operated vehicles and 616 exported vehicles at the Port of Wilmington to enforce the Maritime Transportation Security Act — a move designed to deter illicit activity — in a coordinated operation.  WGMD

  • Kayla Riley of St. Georges won the Delaware Online Preseason Girls Volleyball Player of the Year poll—she beat four nominees—presented by Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists. Field hockey voting will run from Aug. 25 to Aug. 28 and the winner will be announced on Aug. 29.  Delaware Online
