CRIME NEWS

  • A late-night hit-and-run on North DuPont Highway resulted in the death of Barbara Benson, 62, who was struck at 2:20 a.m. and pronounced dead after officers arrived at 2:48 a.m., and Dover police are searching for suspect Aaliyah Graves—whose black 2001 Toyota Avalon was later found in Worton.  First State Update

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Matt Meyer signed nine bills today that change school board rules, teacher requirements, and student services to improve the school system. The laws will bring universal free breakfast to students from the 2026-2027 school year (and add provisions for remote board meetings and training for board members).  WGMD

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Matt Meyer signed a new law on Aug. 21 that created an online animal abuse registry maintained by the Office of Animal Welfare. The law bars animal shelters from approving pet adoptions for offenders by listing their names, birthdates, booking photos and convictions, and it allows early removal for those convicted if they prove rehabilitation.  Coast TV
  • Attorney General Kathy Jennings and her colleagues prevailed in a lawsuit to keep AmeriCorps funding—ensuring the federal agency continues its national service programs.  Bay to Bay News
  • After Councilwoman Donyale Hall raised concerns about City Hall's safety, Dover City Council formed an ad hoc security committee to examine options such as adding security staff, metal detectors, or a police officer. The committee, composed of three council members and a Dover Police lieutenant, will meet today to discuss measures funded by discretionary funds—less than $10,000—and will present its recommendations to the full council later this month.  WBOC
