BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mark Hudson, a Salisbury resident, won $140K in Delaware Park Casino’s High Limit Room on Aug. 23 with a $10 bet—his win came one day after his wife hit a jackpot and he said it will let him cut back on work hours. The casino paid nearly $9 million in jackpots in August, underscoring a strong payout trend.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hummingbirds have been in Delaware since spring and will gradually leave this fall, with some starting as early as September and others staying until November. Michael Moore of the Delaware Ornithological Society advised that feeders use a sugar and water mix—placed in shaded areas to keep the birds safe.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Matt Meyer signed several housing bills that cut red tape, protect renters and manufactured homeowners, and let Sussex County use impact fees on new permits to help fund local schools. The laws will expand affordable housing options and boost homeowner legal services—policies aimed at fairer processes for families across the state.  Coast TV
  • House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown and Senate leaders set up special committees at Legislative Hall in Dover to review last year's property reassessment that led to higher property and school taxes. Public hearings will begin later this month, and lawmakers will use the sessions to analyze the reassessment process, future tax structures, and options for targeted tax relief — officials say their findings will guide next steps in the legislative session.  WDEL
  • New Castle County plans to send revised property tax bills by Sept 30 after school districts reset and split residential and commercial rates. The county will offer payment plans for school tax increases over $300 and refund overpayments above $50 — residents should check their mail for details.  Delaware Online
  • Governor Matt Meyer signed seven bipartisan laws on Wednesday, September 4 to strengthen housing protections and expand affordable homes for families, including updating rules for manufactured home sales and rental programs — actions that cut red tape and enhance fairness. HEALTH NEWS

  • A Delaware Department of Insurance report said GLP-1 medication use nearly doubled among fully insured commercial members from 2020 to 2023—rebates offset the increased spending, so premiums have not risen. Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro added that further pharmacy spending analysis will expand in the coming months.  WGMD
  • Bayhealth is taking its breast health outreach on the road with its mobile unit offering free clinical breast exams and other services as part of the Go Pink! Grow Hope initiative—aiming to promote early detection for women 40 and older—in Kent and Sussex counties. The mobile unit will visit Milford, Dover, and Verona Woods from Sept. 27 to Oct. 24 with walk-ins welcome.  Coast TV
