EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delaware State University set a new enrollment record with over 6600 students this fall as applications spiked 300% and INSPIRE scholars now make up most new students—leaders say final census numbers will be released at the end of October.  WGMD

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control set a new daily limit of 50 spot fish per angler to help protect local fish populations. A recent stock assessment showed the population fell below sustainable levels and the rule meets regional conservation guidelines (ASMS).  WBOC
  • The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control and the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays are installing 400 reinforced concrete wave attenuation devices near Thompson Island in Rehoboth Bay to reduce shoreline erosion and protect the fragile ecosystem+ each device weighs 2,600 pounds and is built with polypropylene fiber mesh for strength.  Coast TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Delaware law strengthens health training and treatment at school sports events to help schools respond quickly to sudden cardiac arrest—the leading cause of death among young athletes, according to the Mayo Clinic Health System. The law is expected to improve emergency response in schools.  Bay to Bay News
  • Delaware lawmakers held the second of four property reassessment hearings on Tuesday morning at Legislative Hall at 9:30 a.m.—officials from Kent and Sussex counties were questioned as part of efforts to update property values for the first time in decades.  Coast TV
  • Governor Matt Meyer launched a new state website on Tuesday that offers federal workers, contractors and families links to food, healthcare, unemployment benefits and rent relief during the shutdown—resources on the page will be updated as more help becomes available.  Coast TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Greg Carnevale of UnitedHealthcare of Delaware advises residents to start early during open enrollment after a survey showed 43% regret choices made from misleading information—he urges comparing costs, network coverage, and extra benefits for better care.  Bay to Bay News
  • Gov. Matt Meyer signed House Bill 54 into law, creating Delaware’s new Office of Suicide Prevention—using an existing state job so no extra funds are needed. The office will serve as a hub for suicide resources and work with local groups to reduce stigma surrounding suicide.  Bay to Bay News
