Good morning, Dover. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 15th of October.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delaware’s Public Education Funding Commission presented a draft hybrid funding model for the 2027-2028 school year that bases funding on teaching units—weighted student counts and adjusts dollars for low-income and multi-lingual learners without additional state funds. The Commission will meet on Nov. 10 to review data from charter schools and vocational students and to refine accountability measures before finalizing the proposal.  Delaware Public Media
  • Delaware State University reported over 6,600 students on Oct 13—the largest enrollment in its 134-year history and the fourth record in five years. The university credited a surge in applications, its INSPIRE program, and Early College School, and will share final census numbers later this month.  Delaware Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DNREC will hold two public listening sessions on Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. at Little Creek Hunter Education Training Center in Dover and on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. virtually to gather feedback for the Delaware Wildlife Action Plan update—this update is needed for federal grant eligibility and introduces interactive features like a searchable database and digital habitat maps.  WBOC
  • After a weekend storm, Bowers Beach lost dunes and experienced up to a four-foot drop in some areas that left steep cliffs instead of sandy barriers. Neighbors said DNREC will begin emergency beach fill this week—removing dangerous debris and addressing safety concerns.  WBOC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State and local leaders joined Tuesday to break ground on a $22 million Mobility Center on Bradford Street that will offer about 325 parking spaces plus retail and commercial space while adding nearly 85 jobs; construction will start this winter and finish by the end of next year to boost downtown Dover’s revitalization.  WBOC
