COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Delaware State University hosted a Community Violence Intervention Summit on Oct. 14 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center in Dover to bring together local leaders, researchers, and policymakers to discuss ways to prevent violence. The summit—organized by End Community Violence Now and DSU’s neighborhood research centers—featured experts who shared strategies on using academic research to protect our neighborhoods, and End Community Violence Now—Delaware’s state violence prevention group—aimed to spark new community actions.  Delaware State University
  • Today the Food Bank of Delaware began its holiday food drive to collect staples as new SNAP work rules and upcoming changes leave more families at risk of food insecurity. Economic Mobility Director Megan Zavala said the bank will see higher demand after exemptions end on November 1—local groups are urged to donate or host food drives.  WBOC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • DNREC in Dover is asking local residents for input as it works to update the Delaware Wildlife Action Plan & improve protection for local wildlife. The department will review comments and use them to shape the new plan & set future priorities.  Bay to Bay News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware Supreme Court heard arguments in Dover on Oct 15 regarding Elon Musk’s $50 billion pay package as attorneys for Tesla sought to overturn a 2023 ruling that canceled the plan— the court will deliver a written opinion in a few months.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware joined a coalition with 14 other states to form the Governors Public Health Alliance — a multi-state partnership where chief executives coordinate public health strategies.  Bay to Bay News
  • State Rep. Madinah Wilson-Anton performed stand-up comedy on the YouTube show Kill Tony on Sept 29—earning the Big Joke Book for her minute set—and returned from Texas, saying the performance boosted her confidence in mixing humor with her political work.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware faces a crossroad as a proposed change by the Board of Electrical Examiners—if passed—would remove an exemption allowing cable installers to work without an electrician’s license, a move that would eliminate thousands of jobs and put hundreds of businesses at risk. The change would also raise consumer costs and delay construction projects while adding pressure on a limited pool of licensed electricians.  Bay to Bay News
  • Secretary of Transportation Shanté Hastings toured pedestrian improvements on Kenton Road in Dover today to mark National Pedestrian Safety Month and address safety concerns after 20 pedestrian deaths this year and over 300 in the last decade. The Kenton Road Improvements project, which adds drainage, a wider roadway, and new pedestrian facilities between Route 8 and College Road, will continue until spring 2026—Governor Matt Meyer has proclaimed October as Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month.  WGMD
