COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Union Lodge #7 Masonic Lodge will host an all you can eat pancake breakfast on Saturday, October 25 from 8:00 AM — 11:00 AM to benefit its Scholarship Fund. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 11 — contact Brian Lingenfelter for more details.  Bay to Bay News
  • Brandywine Valley SPCA is hosting PetSmart adoption events during National Adoption Week where locals can adopt adult cats and larger dogs at a price they choose until Oct.26 — fees are waived to help more homeless animals find homes. The initiative runs at SPCA campuses and PetSmart locations, including Dover, in partnership with PetSmart Charities.  Coast TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • DSU Trustee and Miss Delaware USA Tetra Shockley will represent Delaware at the Miss USA pageant on Oct. 24 — she will honor DSU and its Hornet community with a DSU Hornet-inspired costume. The pageant will air live at 8:00 p.m on The CW Network from the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.  WGMD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delaware State University announced that students and families impacted by the government shutdown will temporarily have Fall 2025 payments deferred and lower balance and down payment requirements if they are in good academic and financial standing. A review team from Student Accounts, Student Success, Institutional Advancement, and Financial Aid will assess requests when proper documentation (such as furlough paperwork) is submitted.  WBOC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Caesar Rodney School District board voted unanimously to place a referendum on the February ballot that will increase the average homeowner's tax bill by $274 a year — the extra funds will support school security, student support and teacher recruitment while generating $6.1M in its first year.  Delaware Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Delaware residents are urged to prepare their homes for the colder months by installing and testing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, and keeping fire extinguishers accessible (with December and January as peak periods for house fires). They should also keep flammable objects at least 3 feet from heat sources and practice an escape plan.  Delaware Online
  • Bayhealth announced The Next Wave, a multi-year plan to upgrade care services in central and southern Delaware with new equipment and facilities. The Sussex Campus will add a childcare center, medical office building and interventional suite while the Kent Campus expands its patient tower, private rooms and emergency department — all to meet growing local needs by 2029.  Coast TV
  • Bayhealth’s resuscitation teams at the Kent and Sussex campuses received multiple Get with the Guidelines-Resuscitation awards from the American Heart Association on October 20th—recognition that reflects their commitment to quality emergency care.  Bay to Bay News

  • Erv Miller Stable's C Millertime Again pulled an upset win in the $110,000 DSBF final at Harrington Raceway yesterday—Corey Callahan rode the horse at $10.00 odds—and surprised many racing fans locally.  Bay to Bay News
  • Delaware State football coach DeSean Jackson said his Hornets are ready to test their improved skills as they face North Carolina Central on Oct. 25 in Durham—he noted that better running, passing, and discipline against penalties could help the team turn past losses into future wins—The game will show if the Hornets’ hard work pays off.  Delaware Online
