  • A 22-year study showed that Delaware has one of the highest rates of business bankruptcies in the country—many local companies have struggled with money issues.  Bay to Bay News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delaware education experts warn that reading scores are very low—only 41% of students in grades 3-8 are proficient—and call for immediate adoption of a phonics-based Science of Reading program; they point to Mississippi's success as a model for boosting literacy. Leaders stress that swift action is needed to help more children learn to read.  Bay to Bay News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government shutdown has halted SNAP benefits in Delaware, and families must use funds already on their cards or contact help at Delaware 211—details for local food pantries are available until funding resumes. The Delaware Department of Health and Social Services said benefits will not restart until the government reopens, adding pressure on those in need.  Delaware Online
  • Dover's Planning Commission voted unanimously on Oct. 20 to recommend rezoning 600 S. State St.—a move that brings Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus one step closer to its planned expansion.  Bay to Bay News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Ellen Magee said her family opposes a request to rezone over 60 acres next to Magee Farms for 210 new units—she fears it will limit their long-standing hunting tradition. Sussex County Council held a public hearing on Tuesday and deferred the rezoning vote for later—leaving the future of the project uncertain.  Coast TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Blue Hens held on to defeat their Conference USA rival at Dover and snapped a two-game losing streak. The win marked the first Wednesday home game in 122 years—since they played Wilmington Conference Academy on October 14, 1903.  Bay to Bay News
