  • Community Connection Shirt Design finalists took part in an exclusive tour on Dec. 15 at Aviation North at Summit Airport in Middletown. Crystal Run Elementary School students Hailey Baker (10), Isaac Eaton (11) and Anikel Singamsetty (10) met Captain Jeff Whitmarsh during a private hangar and aircraft tour.  Delaware Online

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tim Hortons opened its sole Delaware location in Dover last week with a soft launch and the franchise said it will open 10 more stores over the next five years.  Bay to Bay News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Matt Meyer announced that nearly $19M in medical debt was wiped out for over 18,000 residents as part of a state initiative. The state will partner with Undue Medical Debt to continue purchases up to $50M, and eligible residents will receive letters from Dec. 19 to 23.  Coast TV
  • The Delaware State Housing Authority and Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh announced $1.51-million in Home4Good Grants this week to support 17 local nonprofits + 26 housing programs aimed at helping residents retain or find stable housing.  WDEL
  • DNREC urged hunters to follow safe handling practices as waterfowl hunting season reopens. Officials advised hunters to report sick or dead birds and use proper gear after a snow goose was confirmed with avian influenza in eastern Kent County on Dec. 8.  WGMD

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pet owners are urged to watch for signs of cold stress, like shivering or slowing down, when walking in low temperatures. Dogs with thinner coats may be at risk below 45°F and Delaware law restricts unattended outdoor time to (15 minutes) during inclement weather.  Delaware Online
  • DNREC confirmed H5N1 in a wild snow goose from eastern Kent County and urged hunters to follow safety protocols for handling and reporting wild birds as Delaware’s duck season opens today (Canada goose season begins three days later).  WBOC

  • University of Delaware’s Fightin’ Blue Hens travel to Mobile, Alabama to face the Ragin’ Cajuns in their first bowl game as an FBS team today at 8:30 p.m. ESPN airs the game and local watch parties are set at Newark (Grain Craft Bar and Kitchen, Buffalo Wild Wings) and Rehoboth.  Delaware LIVE
