CRIME NEWS
- ➤ State police responded on June 16 at 9:18 a.m. to Four Seasons Pizza (2467 South State Street) after reports of a forced entry burglary and later arrested 25-year-old John Carey (from Camden-Wyoming) on June 19 for using a knife to open cash registers and steal money, and he now faces charges including burglary, possession of burglar tools, theft, and criminal mischief with a $7,100 secured bond. - ➤ The 50th anniversary of Jaws on Friday prompted local experts to review how sharks shape our coastal waters—OCEARCH’s research shows that their largest male white shark, Contender, may soon pass through Delmarva as he migrates north. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Master Sgt. Jeff Brown, a retired veteran, said House Substitute 1 to House Bill 1, which would create a Delaware Department of Veterans Affairs, has flaws that may bar some veterans from serving. It passed the House on May 25 by a unanimous vote from 38 lawmakers and was sent to the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee on June 10—Brown warned the bill might unfairly disqualify military retirees and others based on discharge status. - ➤ DelDOT broke ground on a three-year project along Route 1 near Minos Conaway Road, Nassau Road and Old Mill Road to improve safety, add roundabouts and create new shared-use pathways. The plan—designed to eliminate eight crossovers and add over two miles of paths—will finish by summer 2028. Coast TV
- ➤ The Delaware Police Officer Standards and Training Commission announced that 14 individuals completed the POST Approved Instructor Course (June 9 to 13) at the University of Delaware Police Department, representing several state agencies.
